Color Wow Dream Coat Review: Does it Work?
If I were only allowed to wear one hairstyle for the rest of my life, then sleek and straight would be my choice, without hesitation. For me, nothing beats a super neat, high-shine look so when a certain hair product started causing a frenzy on TikTok promising to give ‘glass hair’, I couldn’t resist putting it to the test.
The product in question is, of course, the Color Wow Supernatural Dream Coat Spray. If you haven’t already seen this little silver bottle do the rounds, then you should know that it boasts thousands of rave reviews, with beauty enthusiasts going as far as calling it liquid gold. It’s also the secret behind both Kim K and J Lo's iconic laminated hair look – as confirmed by celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton – which is precisely the level of glam I aspire to.
The star of the show has landed in my hands and onto my hair, and I'm eager to share my thoughts with you. Let's dive into this Color Wow Dream Coat review!
What is the Color Wow Dream Coat Spray?
Essentially, it’s a heat-activated, anti-humidity treatment that waterproofs hairs to stop frizz, even in the worst humidity.
How does it work?
The Color Wow Dream Coat Spray works its magic once applied to damp hair and then blow-dried with tension. Once the product is sealed with heat, it creates a waterproof veil over the hair and gives strands that super glossy, laminated effect that we all know and love. Supposedly, the revamped high-shine, humidity-proofed hair is meant to last 3-4 shampoos, so let's put this claim to the test.
What’s my hair type?
My hair type: I’m blessed with an abundance of it. My hair is thick and straight for the most part, although a stubborn section at the back insists on being wavy/kinky if left to air dry. I also regularly use a semi-permanent hair dye to colour it a warm-toned brown, which gives it a healthy shine.
Typically, it takes me about 25 minutes to blow-dry my hair, with an inevitable arm ache as a trade-off. It can get a little frizzy and tangled, so I'm banking on this silver bottle to work its magic and restore smoothness to my strands. What I'm really looking for though is to boost my hair's luminosity - I want that supernatural shine.
Putting the Colour Wow Dream Coat Spray to the test
I tried the spray for the first time for my birthday dinner. Risky? Yes, but I made sure I knew exactly how to use the Color Wow Dream Coat so that there were no mishaps.
I started by dividing my freshly washed and towel-dried hair into equal sections. Then I sprayed them with the Color Wow spray from root to tip until every strand was completely saturated. It feels a little OTT using that much product, but skimping on application will only leave you disappointed. Since the formula is free from oils or waxes, there's no need to fret about ending up with a greasy or sticky residue. You can liberally spritz away to your heart's content!
As for the process, it was pretty easy and didn't interfere too much with my usual haircare routine. The scent is barely detectable, if anything it smells of water. And, as the Color Wow spray doubles up as a heat protectant, there’s no need to apply any other hair products - extra brownie points for a streamlined haircare routine.
I needed to lock in this liquid gold, ASAP, so I blow-dried my hair in sections, using tension with a hairbrush. That arm-ache-inducing 25 minute drying time? I managed to shave 10 minutes off. Plus, I noticed that my hair wasn't as knotted and the persistent wavy patch was less noticeable.
So far, so good. I continued with my blow-dry and followed up with straightening my hair. Surprisingly, the process felt remarkably seamless. Not only did my hair feel lighter, softer and smoother, but I found that it was much more manageable. Although I wasn't blown away by the shine, I added a little hair serum and headed to my birthday dinner satisfied that my hair was looking its sleekest.
The real test was seeing how my hair held up days later. I live in the UK where it's always rainy season, so I can truly put the spray's water-resistant claims to the test. I got caught in rain showers, and whilst I'm not too convinced that beads of water were rolling off my strands, I was impressed that my hair stayed frizz-free.
As for the anti-humidity and water-proof powers lasting up 3-4 shampoos; I'm not persuaded. I did find that my hair remained smooth, straight and manageable until my next hair wash, and styling was made easier where I only needed a quick zip over with the straighteners, but that wavy patch and flyaways would creep back in whenever I didn't use the product.
The verdict
With all the hype surrounding Color Wow, I couldn't help but have high expectations for the Dream Coat review. I invested in the product with hopes of achieving the mirror-like shine I've been longing for, but unfortunately I think it fell short on that front. Perhaps, the Color Wow Pop & Lock High Gloss Finish is more up my alley.
That being said, I enjoyed using the Color Wow Dream Coat and would reach for it again, particularly for occasions when a good hair day is a must. I appreciate that the price tag is on the higher end (that's where Cosmetify's price drop alerts come in clutch), but I'll happily pay for the ease and convenience it provides. If you're someone with ultra-frizzy, untameable hair, I can see it being a total game-changer for your routine and worth the investment.
