Weleda Skin Food Review: Yay or Nay?

By Gabriella Buckner -
Cover image Weleda review

Skin that feels soft and hydrated all day long? ‘Miracle worker’? After years of trying out moisturisers that have all been pretty ‘meh’ and just feel like something perfunctory tacked on to the end of my skincare routine, I was pretty sceptical reading about Weleda Skin Food.

But when a product has won dozens of awards and has the backing of celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Victoria Beckham as well as makeup artists, it’s hard not to give it a go.

Plus this little green tube won’t break the bank, and if you’re on a super tight budget then there’s also a cheaper, travel size version (plus Cosmetify is always bringing you the best discount codes; set an alert for those here).

Weleda Skin Food For Dry & Rough Skin

£11.96 £15.71 (24% off)

I’ve been using the Weleda Skin Food moisturiser for about a month now, and the short version of my verdict is: buy it! If you’ve got dry skin on your face and/or body, this rich lotion is a lovely choice. My skin feels so soft when I wake up in the morning and I can’t wait to try out more products from the range.

My Skin

What is Weleda Skin Food used for?

The Skin Food lotion can be used anywhere where you’ve got dry skin, most commonly the face and rough areas like the elbows, knees, hands and feet. It boosts the skin’s moisture levels and protects the skin from water loss, meaning it’s especially great for people who work outside or with their hands.

Personally, I’ve been using this super rich cream on all of the above areas. While I don’t have a very dry complexion, my skin always feels tight after showers or if I don’t use a facial oil, so this thick moisturiser worked great for me (and for the rest of my body, where I have tonnes of dry patches).

What makes Weleda Skin Food so great?

What’s all the hype with this product, though? All moisturisers hydrate, don’t they? Well, Weleda, a brand known for ethical sourcing and largely organic ingredients, have loaded this intensive cream with nourishing and natural ingredients to soothe, soften and repair dryness.

What’s in Skin Food:

  • Lanolin - Softens and hydrates, thanks to being chemically similar to our naturally produced sebum
  • Beeswax - Softens the skin
  • Glycerin - Absorbs water to keep the skin hydrated
  • Sweet almond oil and sunflower oil - deeply nourish the skin
  • Calendula - Combats inflammation, eczema and dryness
  • Chamomile - Soothes irritation and redness and can also help with signs of ageing and hyperpigmentation
  • Rosemary - Stimulates circulation
Skin Food Ingredients

As an added bonus, Skin Food, like all Weleda products, is cruelty-free and free from mineral oil, parabens and synthetic fragrances, which is something I appreciate as I prefer more natural products and follow a mostly vegan diet. (Skin Food contains beeswax and lanolin—from sheep’s wool—so it isn’t vegan, but Weleda follows regulations from the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) to respect biodiversity in the sourcing of all ingredients, so it’s something I still feel comfortable using!)

What skin type should use Weleda Skin Food?

Like it says on the package, Weleda Skin Food is designed for dry, rough skin. The brand says that wherever you take a lot out of your skin, Skin Food puts it back in, meaning this moisturiser is great for people with jobs like gardening or construction or those of us with naturally dry skin.

Like I wrote earlier, I wouldn’t classify my complexion as super dry (and my makeup certainly likes to melt off part way through the day), but I always feel like I need to put a lot of moisture back in my face after washing it or showering, and this moisturiser definitely delivers.

How to use Weleda Skin Food on your face:

When I first started testing this product, it felt super sticky and thick to me and I felt like I couldn’t get it to sink in properly. Now after about a month of use, I’m totally in love with this and use it morning and night on my face.

How to use weleda

Here are some tips for application I’ve worked out over the last month:

  • Only use a small amount as a little goes a long way
  • Let any toners or watery products you use pre-moisturiser sink in first as Skin Food tends to slip and slide over them if your skin is too wet (also make sure your hands aren’t wet)
  • On the other hand, applying over a serum or mixed with a little serum helps Skin Food glide smoothly over your face

The tacky, thick texture of Skin Food is something to get used to for sure. I didn’t like it at first, but I’m now converted and my other moisturisers feel too thin.

What is the difference between Weleda Skin Food and Weleda Skin Food Light?

If you prefer a lighter moisturiser, then Weleda Skin Food Light is going to be your jam! This moisturiser has all the benefits of the original Weleda Skin Food, but with a lighter, silkier texture.
